How to Install WP Theme?

So you’ve finally managed to install the WordPress software and have gotten all your content ready for posting! Well, before you do that, you’ll need to install the right WordPress theme for your website/blog. There are thousands of WordPress themes available out there which can be downloaded instantly.

Let’s take you through the steps of installing a WordPress theme after you’re done downloading it. Please note, although a WordPress theme can be installed easily, it’ll completely change the function and look of your website.

How to install a WP theme from inside WordPress
We’re presuming that you’ve already found the theme of your choice. In case you haven’t, the easiest way to go about it is looking up the theme directory at This can also be done from within the WordPress installation. You can access it from Dashboard -> Appearances -> Themes. Simply click the ‘Add New’ button situated at the top.
You’ll be taken to a page where you’ll be given the choice of downloading all kinds of different WordPress themes. Don’t forget to have a look at the most recently released themes. You can even go through the most popular ones or search for a specific one based on a keyword. Once you’ve located the theme you’d like to install, hover your mouse cursor on top of its thumbnail and click on the install button. You can even go through its details and preview it if you need.
WordPress will start the installation process, and once it’s done you’ll need to activate the theme for it to go live on your website. You can even configure several other options such as its design, layout and color depending on the theme you’ve downloaded. Please note, every theme comes with its own unique details and method of editing. Hence it’s always a good idea to cross check with the official website of the theme.

WordPress theme installation using the upload method
In case you’ve downloaded your WordPress theme from a third party website, you’ll need to install it with the upload method or FTP method (discussed in next step). Go to the Dashboard of your WordPress installation and click on Appearances -> Themes. Doing so will take you to the ‘Themes’ page, where you’ll need to click the ‘Add New’ button. Click the button ‘Upload Theme’ on the next page.
You’ll now be given the option of uploading the theme you’ve downloaded from a third party website. In most cases, you’d have a .zip file which will need to be uploaded in entirety. Click the ‘Choose File’ button and then select that theme’s .zip file. Once selected, click on the ‘Install Now’ button.

WordPress installation via the FTP method file that you picked up using the upload method above can also be uploaded through a FTP (file transfer protocol) software. You’ll first need to unzip that theme’s folder, so it can be uploaded directly to the correct location on your server. Launch your FTP program and navigate your way to this location:
At this location you’ll see every theme installation having its own specific folder. All you’ll need to do is upload your selected theme’s folder at this location.
You’ll now be able to access this theme via your WP Dashboard, through Appearances -> Themes.
